DeMoines, IA— During an interview with Tucker Carlson a the Family Leader Summit on Friday, Gov Ron DeSantis said that if he is elected President of the United States, he would not wait until the end of his term in office to pardon Americans, but would start the pardoning process as soon as he took office.
“So the day after the election, we're going to open up an ability for people to submit applications, ask for the pardon based on whether they were treated dissimilarly or whether the government mobilized against them, and so we're going to do it the front end of the administration, and not gonna wait until my last day in office,” said DeSantis.
Gov. DeSantis made the case that as a sitting governor, he has dealt with pardoning people convicted of crimes.
DeSantis and his cabinet regularly hold parole board hearings and decided which convicted criminals should be released from custody.
“It's going to be done on the case by case basis. Because I'm the governor and I've actually had to look at these things and you owe it to everybody to do that but we will be issuing pardons,” added DeSantis.
If elected, DeSantis could pardon a large swath of those who engaged and were jailed during the Capitol riot that took place on January6, 2021.
