Senators Rick Scott (R-FL), Marco Rubio (R-FL), and Ted Cruz (R-TX) announced their intention to designate June 2nd as National Rough Riders Day.
During the Spanish-American War, the 1st United States Volunteer Calvary, also known as the Rough Riders, was a regiment based out of Tampa that fought in the Spanish-American War, including the siege of Santiago de Cuba.
Before President Theodore Roosevelt (R) became the Commander-in-Chief, he famously was the Lieutenant Colonel of the Riders under Colonel Leonard Wood.
Sen. Scott mentioned the incredible historic tradition of the regiment in his statement regarding the resolution.
“Florida has a proud history of military service and achievement, and I am honored to be joined by Senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz with this resolution honoring the service and sacrifice of the Rough Riders,” stated Sen. Scott.
“While President Theodore Roosevelt’s leadership of this cavalry regiment has secured its place in history, it is my hope that this resolution designating June 2 as National Rough Riders Day will ensure that future generations learn the stories of the brave men who served under his command and honor those who gave their lives in service to our nation.”
Then Lieutenant Colonel Roosevelt led the charge at Kettle Hill and San Juan Hill. Despite taking heavy losses, they were present for the surrender of enemy forces in Cuba.
Not only would the Senator's resolution establish June 2nd as National Rough Rider Day, but it also encourages “people of the United States to observe the day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.”
Sen. Cruz provided a statement as well, saying, “125 years ago, a group of brave men came together and volunteered to defend the United States. The Rough Riders came from all over the country, including Texas, where they trained in San Antonio. Using the skills they learned in San Antonio, they went on to successfully fight for freedom in Cuba. Over a century later, the courage and commitment to freedom the Rough Riders demonstrated is an inspiration for us all.”
2023 is the 125th anniversary of the Rough Riders in the Spanish-American War.
