Newsom Proposes 28th Amendment to Constitution

Share

California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) has announced his proposal for a 28th amendment to the constitution. Newsom, a political figure who's expected to join the 2024 presidential election, has been an ardent supporter of gun control measures. Newsom now pleads his case with Americans on accepting a 28th amendment.

In the video released on social media, Newsom argues that the United States needs to "reclaim our freedom from fear." He takes issues with lawmakers extending thoughts and prayers after shootings, and he pushes back against opponents of gun control measures, arguing instead that it's not an infringement on Americans' 2nd amendment rights.

Saying that he wants to preserve the right to bear arms for Americans, Newsom is now proposing a 28th amendment to the Constitution, which would include 4 measures.

These measures include raising the minimum age to purchasing a weapon from 18 to 21, it would mandate universal background checks, it would institute reasonable waiting periods, and it would also enact a ban on civilians from buying assault rifles he argues civilians shouldn't own.

Republicans have long opposed these measures, but Newsom claims that Republicans, Democrats, Independents, and gun owners overwhelmingly support these measures and that he'll be leading the fight to introduce this 28th amendment.

If accepted, the 28th amendment would continue to be respectful of "America's gun owning tradition."

Newsom was teasing a big announcement this week, and many political pundits believed that he would be announcing his presidential aspirations. However, this was not the case. He is still seen as a presidential hopeful, and in the weeks leading up to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis' (R) presidential announcement, Newsom heavily criticized DeSantis.

Newsom, this week, called DeSantis a "small, pathetic man" over DeSantis' controversial decision to send migrants to blue states. He also teased that DeSantis could be liable on charges of kidnapping though Newsom has not announced legal action.
