Mayor Suarez Announces Presidential Run

Share

After weeks of speculation, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez has finally announced his candidacy for president. The 45 year old Mayor released an advertisement this week, recounting his work as Mayor and providing a glimpse of what his aspirations entail. Though Florida Republicans have begun to criticize Suarez, the Mayor is ready to enter the presidential race.

Taking to social media, Suarez shared his announcement advertisement, which depicts him running through Miami and interacting with locals.

With the tagline "It's time we get started," Suarez recounts his story as Mayor of Miami, sharing that the city is now thriving because of his leadership. He walks viewers through his old home, his school, and he shares accomplishments like instituting a program to help children create bank accounts.

He shared that when he was elected, "the city was broke and broken," but his election with overwhelming support helped him lower taxes and support businesses in South Florida.

"All Washington wants to do is fight with each other instead of fighting for the people that put them in office," Suarez laments, adding that his father taught him that he can choose his battles, so he's choosing "the biggest one" of his life in running for president.

In speaking to POLITICO in May, Mayor Suarez expressed that he sees himself as a game-changing lawmaker.

"I think I can grow the tent - not for an election, but for a generation" he explained, adding that "it matters who is the communicator of ideas and how they communicate those ideas. You can look at my history and know that I'm someone who's a unifier. You can look at my history and see that I'm someone who appreciates the nuances in a variety of different Hispanic cultures."

Suarez is now the third Florida resident to enter the race after President Donald Trump (R) and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) entered before him.
