Frost Says DeSantis is 'Undermining Democracy'

Share

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) has a lot on his plate. Not only is he running for president, but he’s still the Governor of Florida. In this capacity, Gov. DeSantis is now pitting himself against Florida Democrats, again. Gov. DeSantis is being accused of “undermining Democracy’ as Democrats file complaints.

Earlier this month, Democratic firebrand Maxwell Frost (D) took to the stage at a Paramore concert and uttered words that drew loud cheers and applause – “F--- Ron DeSantis!”

DeSantis is no stranger to political opposition, but as he embarks on a journey that could land him in the White House, he has some unfinished business at home that could be pressing.

This month, Rep. Frost announced that he and Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin (D) have asked House Republicans to hold a hearing regarding Florida "undermining democracy' through the legislative and executive branches. However, the lawmakers argue that they haven't received a response.

Rep.s Frist and Raskin issued a memo, outlining their complaints against Governor DeSantis.

In the memo, DeSantis argues that “through these actions, members of the Florida legislative and executive branches have collaborated to consolidate power, punish dissent, and strip the rights and freedoms of Floridians. Together, these three steps are characteristic of creating a fascist state and are antithetical to the principles and practices of democracy.”

DeSantis is also facing complaints that were filed by the Florida Democratic Party. The complaints in question stem from three staff members from the DeSantis administration, which includes James Uthmeier.

Uthmeier and other staff members are accused of soliciting presidential campaign contributions from lobbyists. As well, DeSantis is accused of soliciting endorsements for his presidential race.

Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried (D), who faced Governor DeSantis in the 2020 election, issued a statement regarding the accusations.

"These allegations represent a gross violation of state laws and ethics," Fried said, adding that Democrats "could not in good conscience ignore them."
