2024 Presidential Election

Florida Members of Congress React to Trump's Federal Indictment

Former President Donald Trump has been indicted (again) on charges related to the supposed mishandling of classified documents found at his Mar-a-Lago residence. When these charges were made the day House investigations suggested President Joe Biden took a $5 million bribe as Vice President, many Florida House Republicans said this was to prevent President Trump's reelection and an attempt protect President Biden.

Representative Byron Donalds (R-FL) summarized the situation in a recent tweet, calling the Trump indictment "phony" and "the most significant threat to our democracy."

"On the day members of Congress learn from an FBI document linking then VP Joe Biden to receiving $5 MILLION from Burisma in a pay-for-play scheme, Biden’s DOJ announces another phony indictment of the leading candidate for the GOP Presidential nomination, Biden’s likely opponent, and the former POTUS. This mob-like justice system is turning Lady Justice on its head and is the most significant threat to our democracy. Stand with President Trump," said Rep. Donalds.

Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL) also called Trump's indictment "phony" and stated "this scheme won't succeed," going so far as to say not only will Trump win the 2024 Election, but "Joe Biden will be Hunter’s cellmate."

"The phony Boxes Hoax indictment is an attempt to distract the American public from the millions of dollars in bribes that the Biden Crime Family received from foreign nationals. This scheme won't succeed. President Donald Trump will be back in the White House and Joe Biden will be Hunter’s cellmate," said Rep. Gaetz.

Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) did not go as far as Rep. Gaetz in saying Biden faced imprisonment; she did say the allegations of Biden receiving bribe money were "impeachable" and that it is not an accident the Trump indictment came at the same time.

"The DOJ indicting President Trump the same day House Oversight Members (to include me) saw documentation from the FBI stating that BIDEN AND his SON each received a wire transfer of $5 million from a foreign actor is not by accident. What Biden has done IS impeachable," said Rep. Luna.

Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) stated, "We have completely lost trust in the [Department of Justice]," and because of the timing, "This sure looks like a banana republic."

"We have completely lost trust in the DOJ. The DOJ needs to come out tonight & explain how this is somehow different than what Hillary did. What Biden did. And this all happens on the same day Biden’s $5M bribe comes out. This is America & this sure looks like a banana republic," said Sen. Scott.

Similarly, Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) said, "There is no limit to what these people will do to protect their power & destroy those who threaten it, even if it means ripping our country apart & shredding public faith in the institutions that hold our republic together."

Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL), who is running against Trump in the 2024 GOP Primary, also defended the former President, calling "weaponization of federal law enforcement... a mortal threat to a free society."

Gov. DeSantis also took a moment to plug his Presidential campaign, saying he would "bring accountability to the DOJ, excise political bias, and end weaponization once and for all," if elected President.

"The weaponization of federal law enforcement represents a mortal threat to a free society. We have for years witnessed an uneven application of the law depending upon political affiliation. Why so zealous in pursuing Trump yet so passive about Hillary or Hunter? The DeSantis administration will bring accountability to the DOJ, excise political bias, and end weaponization once and for all," said DeSantis.

Finally, Representative Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) has been the only Florida Democrat to speak on the indictment. While he did say Trump deserves a fair trial, Rep. Moskowitz did share a song that stated, "That mother*****r's guilty," which was shared by actor Chris Evans .

"We should wait to hear all the facts before passing judgment. He deserves a fair trial. But this song slaps!" said Rep. Moskowitz.
