Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) announced this week that he will end birthright citizenship if he wins the presidency in 2024. The announcement comes after President Donald Trump (R) shared his own comments regarding the fate of birthright citizens. During his time as president, Trump received significant criticism, and if he becomes president of the United States, he’s vowing to allow no birthright citizenship.
According to the DeSantis campaign, the Florida governor will be providing a more detailed outline of his immigration policy at another time. However, Governor DeSantis is making it clear that his hard-line stance on immigration concerns is an important part of his platform. This, he mentioned during a speech this week in south Texas.
“I have listened to people in D.C. for years and years and years, going back decades – Republicans and Democrats – always chirping about this yet never actually bringing the issue to a conclusion” DeSantis explained, noting that “what we’re saying is no excuses.”
He continued, “If somebody were breaking into your house to do something bad, you would respond with force. Yet why don’t we do that at the southern border?”.
DeSantis further shared that “If the cartels are cutting through the border wall, trying to run product into this country, they’re going to end up stone cold dead as a result of that bad decision. And if you do that one time, you’re not going to see them mess with our wall ever again.”
Trump made a similar announcement regarding his views on birthright citizenship, and although DeSantis didn’t directly reference him, immigration is becoming a, important topic to discuss in the political arena.
“Dangling the price of citizenship to the future offspring of illegal immigrants is a major driver of illegal migration,” he lamented, adding that “it is also inconsistent with the origal understanding of 14thAmendment, and we will force the courts and Congress to finally address this pained policy.
