New Hampshire—Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis held a presidential campaign event in the city of Hollis,  a day after releasing his immigration policy in Texas, where he was asked if he was the “right candidate” to actually fulfill President Donald Trump’s campaign promise to “Drain the Swamp.”

Gov. DeSantis seized on the opportunity to throw a political jab at former President Trump, stating that under his leadership, “we didn't drain it (swamp) and that Trump didn’t follow through with “Drain the Swamp” initiative he campaigned on.

“I remember these rallies in 2016, it was exciting “Drain the Swamp.” I also remember, “Lock her up, lock her up,” right?  And then two weeks, after the election, ‘oh don't, forget about it, forget I ever said that,” said DeSantis.  “One thing you'll get from me, if I tell you I'm going to do something not just saying that for an election, and there are promises I could make that may help me marginally politically, that I don't know that I could that I could necessarily follow through on, so I will not make that.

So after campaigning for governor in 2018 on the “draining the swamp” slogan, DeSantis has now coined the term “Break the Swamp.”

“I think the idea of draining the swamp, in some respects it I think it misses it a little bit because if you—we didn't drain it it's worse today than it's ever been by far, and that's a sad testament due to the state of affairs of our country but even if you're successful at draining it the next guy can just refill it. So I wanna break the swamp that's really what we need to do,” added DeSantis.

Both DeSantis and Trump were in New Hampshire on the same day, with DeSantis adding his campaign event after an influential women’s Republican club announced that Trump would be speaking to their group.
