Salazar Urges Biden to Help Guatemala

Share

Florida Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R) has called on Biden to support Guatemala in ending the migration crisis. With Title 42 coming to an end on May 11th, lawmakers are bracing for the effect.

In a statement, Salazar commented that “the Guatemalans have been pleading with the Biden Administration to help them stem the flow of illegal immigration through Guatemala, only to be treated with contempt in return.” “The United States cannot afford inaction on the Southern Border any longer,” Salazar added, calling on President Joe Biden (D) to “end this crisis NOW!”

Title 42, a Trump-era policy, allowed the government to turn back hundreds of thousands of migrants without giving them the opportunity to file for asylum. In response to the end of Title 42, the Biden Administration has announced that it will be launching migrant processing centers in Central and South America as well as deploying 1,500 additional troops to the border.

Regarding Guatemala, their government has noted that the country is "at a breaking point" after experiencing several waves of migrants that have rushed through to the U.S. Southern Border following what Salazar calls "President Biden's irresponsible comments at the beginning of his presidency."

The Florida Republican argues that some Central American nations profit from said waves of migration because the migrants are charged a transit fee while not impeding their passage.

A press release from Salazar's office informs that the capacity for Guatemala's government "to effectively process and send unauthorized immigrants back to their countries of origin is thinning rapidly." What this will result in is "catastrophic consequences for the United States and our border security given Guatemala’s strategic importance as a critical chokepoint on the migrant journey north."
As a result, Salazar is calling the United States to provide "Guatemala with equipment and resources in order to effectively respond to the immigration concern."
