Jared Moskowitz Demands Compromise on Debt Ceiling

Debt ceiling negotiations between House Republicans, the White House, and Senate Democrats continue, with all sides refusing to budge from their respective positions. Representative Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) recently expressed his willingness to work across the aisle in a CNN appearance, warning "If we default, we do so together, not as Dems or Republicans but as Americans - and then China wins."

"The American people want us to be responsible with spending, but they also know we have to pay our bills for money already spent, just like families do every month. If we default, we do so together, not as Dems or Republicans but as Americans - and then China wins," Moskowitz tweeted.

Additionally, Rep. Moskowitz called out Congressional Republicans for "all the sudden [caring] about spending" under the Biden Administration they did not display during the Trump Administration.

Moskowitz then claimed President Trump "racked up more debt in those four years than any other single President." To clarify: The national debt increased by approximately $9.3 trillion under President Obama's two terms, while the debt increased by $7.8 trillion under Trump according to CNN. Meaning Trump spent much more than any other one-term President, not necessarily that he outspent Obama or Biden altogether.

"It's nice to see my Republican colleagues all the sudden care about spending. When President Trump was in charge, they racked up more debt in those four years than any other single-term President. It seems they only care about spending when there's a Democrat in charge," said Moskowitz.

Nonetheless, he reiterated the importance of reaching a debt ceiling agreement, something the rest of America wants as they must cut their spending. The tricky part, Moskowitz suggests, is "paying our bills."

"That being said, I do think the American people want us to get a deal. I do think they want to see us figure out how we can spend less as they're spending less, but they also want to see us pay our bills. They get a bill in the [mail] every month from their spending, and they know that they got to pay their bills. They don't get to say, "Well, before we pay our bill, let's discuss our spending, American Express or Visa." No, they have to pay their bill. Otherwise, there are real-life consequences," Moskowitz warned.

Earlier in May, Moskowitz teamed up with Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL) to ensure national cemeteries remained protected should debt ceiling negotiations break down.
