Pensacola—Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has announced that he will extend the Red Snapper fishing season from 60 to 7o days.
“The fishing industry contributes almost $14 billion to the state's economy and is responsible for about 120,000 jobs,” said Gov. DeSantis
Gov. DeSantis said that when he took office in 2019, the fishing season was only about 40 days long, but because people in the region have told him that there was more than enough fish in the area, he decided to look into expanding the season every year.
“I talked to a lot of the people that fish and they're like there's a lot more snapper out there than what the federal government says,” said DeSantis
The Red Snapper recreational fishing season starts June 16th and ends July 31st.
The new season coincides with summer vacation so there is a good possibility DeSantis may take the kiddos out for a little fishing outing in the Gulf of Mexico.
