Cava Doesn't support the NAACP Travel Advisory to Florida, but Doesn't Denounce it Either

The NAACP issued a travel advisory to Florida this past weekend, citing how dangerous if believed the state under the leadership of Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Republican-led state legislature. Florida lawmakers like Rep. Byron Donalds (R) have pushed back against the claim, calling it “silly” and “dumb”. However, Democrats are warning that Florida poses a great threat to marginalized groups. Joining in the criticism is Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, who commented on the NAACP Travel Advisory.

Over the weekend, NAACP officials commented on the travel advisory, arguing that “Florida is openly hostile toward African Americans, people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals.”

NAACP President & CEO Derrick Johnson further warned that “under the leadership of Governor DeSantis, the state of Florida has become hostile to Black Americans.”

In response to the travel advisory, although not directly referencing it or Governor DeSantis, Mayor Cava praised Miami-Dade County for having “a long history as a community that celebrates our rick diversity and ensures all people feel safe and welcome.”

“We are known worldwide for our deep-rooted cultural traditions that have grown our economy, helped our small businesses to flourish, and transformed Miami-Dade into a truly global destination,” she added.

Moreover, Cava affirmed that Miami-Dade County is determined to “stand against any efforts to undermine our strengths and shared prosperity,” noting that “we will always be one Miami-Dade – where our cultural diversity and the rich tapestry that makes us so strong is celebrated and protected.”

The League of United Latin American Citizens issued a similar advisory for Hispanic visitors a few weeks ago, and in response to the NAACP advisory, the DeSantis press team is now arguing that it is a publicity tactic to add pressure to Florida’s tourism industry.

Mayor Cava, in her statement, maintained that “everyone will always be welcome in Miami-Dade,” and the statement comes the same week that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) is expected to launch his presidential run.
