The U.S. Supreme Court's decision to keep the abortion pill Mifepristone available to the public was a blow to Conservative and pro-Life Republicans and a win for abortion rights activists.
Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D), who has been on the frontlines of the abortion argument in the House of Representatives, cautions that this Supreme Court decision was only “a temporary win” because Republicans would continue to push “government-mandated pregnancies on women.”
“This is a temporary win. Republicans will keep pushing government-mandated pregnancies on women,” stated Rep. Wasserman Schultz. “Mifepristone is safe, effective, and never should have been in jeopardy. Abortion is a health care right and women must have control over their own bodies.”
The Supreme Court will allow the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals to hear the "emergency request" made by the Justice Department to prevent lower courts from ruling that could limit access to drugs in states where it is still legal to have an abortion.
Rep. Wasserman Schultz’s assertion that “abortion is a healthcare right” is has been the narrative pro-choice advocates have been pushing of late.
Mifepristone, which is used with Misoprostol, accounts for half of the abortions that occur in the U.S. every year.
President Joe Biden recently sided with the high court’s decision.
“I continue to stand by [the Food and Drug Administration’s] evidence-based approval of mifepristone, and my administration will continue to defend FDA’s independent, expert authority to review, approve, and regulate a wide range of prescription drugs,” said President Biden.
In Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law a new 6-week abortion ban less than a year after signing a 15-week ban on abortions.
