Rubio Says Trump Indictment 'Crosses a Line'

President Donald Trump (R) is back home in Florida after receiving 34 charges in New York. The indictment of the 45th president has further divided the country as some have come to his defense while others have celebrated the charges. With Trump maintaining his innocence, Florida Senator Marco Rubio (R) argues that Trump's indictment "crosses a line."

One point that Republicans have shared is the precedent that Trump's indictment sets, calling the effort a "politicization" of the justice system. However, Democrats argue that the president's indictment is not a "weaponization" effort.

Taking to social media, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D) wrote, "I believe that Donald Trump will have a fair trial that follows the facts and the law." "There's no place in our justice system for any outside influence or intimidation in the legal process," Schumer added, commenting that "as the trial proceeds, protest is an American right, but all protests must be peaceful."

Not all lawmakers agree.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz (R) joined other Republicans in chiding the indictment, saying that "the arrest and arraignment of former President Donald Trump by a left-wing Soros prosecutor today is making a mockery of the rule of law," adding that "not only is the indictment frivolous, this political persecution marks a dark day for our country."

Senator Rubio shared similar views, calling Trump's indictment "a bad day for all of us."

"Today, American politics crosses a line that it's never going to come back from," Rubio warned in a video posted on Twitter.

"After today, especially on the basis of how ridiculous these charges are... every prosecutor in America that wants to make a name for themselves, now is gonna have permission to go after someone in the other party. What's gonna stop some Republican or conservative prosecutor now from saying 'I'm gonna go after Joe Biden or his family'? Rubio questioned, adding that the same could happen to Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, and even Nancy Pelosi.

Rubio lamented that "Today we set a 'new normal," and he posits that it's a "new normal" that the country will lament whether people like Trump or not.
