Maxwell Frost Says DeSantis 'Abusing His Power,' Calls FL Republicans His 'Lapdogs'

Representative Maxwell Frost (D-FL) appeared on Washington Post Live to criticize Governor Ron DeSantis, saying he "has been abusing his power to target marginalized communities," and calls Florida Republicans "lapdogs who do what he says."

Speaking with Marianna Sotomayor, the initial question focused on the state of abortion laws in Florida and how Rep. Frost is engaging with his constituents on it.

Rep. Frost answers that "people are very scared in the state of Florida right now."

"People are very scared in the state of Florida right now. Women and childbearing adults, it's our LGBTQ+ community, it's black people, it's immigrants, it's Latinos, it's poor people. It's because we have a Governor who's been abusing his power to target marginalized communities because he wants to run for President and it helps him in his polls for his primary," says Rep. Frost.

Additionally, Frost speaks of Gov. DeSantis signaling his support for a ban on abortion after six weeks, which he believes will pass "because whatever the Governor wants, he gets in this state."

"He said he thinks it's good policy, he thinks it's a good thing, he thinks it should pass, shows me that it will pass. Because whatever the Governor wants, he gets in this state. Because the Republicans in the state legislature are just lapdogs who do what he says," Frost adds.

Frost has been a vocal critic of Governor DeSantis, flat-out calling him a fascist at the end of February in several tweets, refusing to back down.

"I’ve had people tell me to stop using the word fascist in talking about Gov DeSantis and what’s going on in Florida. I won’t stop. This is what’s going on. I won’t tone down my language when we are actively being oppressed. This is my home," he stated, adding, "I won’t let these damn fascists take our state. The working poor and middle class won’t stand for it. I won’t stay quiet. I don’t care what anyone says."
