With fentanyl continually being smuggled over the southern border, Americans continue to suffer its effects. Representative Brian Mast (R-FL) called this "a chemical attack" in a recent tweet, saying that "in less than 6 months, enough fentanyl to kill 1.9 BILLION people has been seized at the southern border."
"In less than 6 months, enough fentanyl to kill 1.9 BILLION people has been seized at the southern border. This is a chemical attack on our nation, and yet Joe Biden is proposing major cuts to Homeland Security. He's determined to make the #BidenBorderCrisis worse," Rep. Mast said.
This shocking number comes from a February report published by the Homeland Security Committee Republicans, along with other details.
In a similar vein, Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) and Representative Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) wrote a letter to the Biden Administration in December demanding the classification of fentanyl as a weapon of mass destruction (WMD), which Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody had also done in November.
If the severity of the fentanyl crisis warrants a designation of the drug as a WMD, efforts to combat it would require more than securing the border.
In January, Representative Mike Waltz (R-FL) and Representative Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) introduced a bill authorizing military force against the cartels, stressing that these organizations are already effectively waging war on the United States.
"Not only are these paramilitary transnational criminal organizations responsible for killing an unprecedented number of Americans, but they are actively undermining our sovereignty by destabilizing our border and waging war against U.S. law enforcement and the Mexican military," stated Waltz.
AG Moody had also agreed with this sentiment, writing another letter to the Biden Administration in February demanding the cartels be designated as terrorist organizations, especially as these groups become increasingly militarized and establish links with other terrorist organizations such as Hamas.
"Our national security requires the federal government to disrupt this collaboration between cartels and terrorist groups," Moody said in her letter.
