Eskamani Chides Proposed 6 Week Abortion Ban

Share

Florida Rep. Anna V. Eskamani (D) is pushing back against Republican legislation that would set a 6-week abortion ban. This comes at a time when Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) has vowed to maintain Florida a "pro-life" state.

Rep. Eskamani responded to the legislation, arguing that "Republican lawmakers in Florida have kicked off the 2023 Legislative Session with the filing of an extreme 6 week abortion ban." Since Roe v. Wade was struck down, Democrats have mobilized support to push back against Republican opposition, and tension between Republicans and Democrats continues to rise regarding the subject.

"Florida Republicans have once again demonstrated a complete disregard for the women of our state and for our collective freedoms," shared Eskamani, adding that "as we've already seen in other states, a six week ban is extreme, dangerous, and will force millions of people out of state to seek care and others will be forced into pregnancy."

The Florida Democrat went on to express that "each of us should be free to live our lives with dignity and to make the decisions that are best for ur lives, families, and communities," saying that "no one wants Ron DeSantis in the exam room with us" because "personal medical decisions should be between me, my family, my doctor and my faith - not politicians."

Eskamani went on to comment on what Florida Democrats are prepared to do to push back against GOP influence, commenting that "as Democrats in the minority we are going to need every Floridian to wake up, show up and demand that their lawmakers vote no on this bill," adding that "regardless of political affiliation, we know that Floridians time and time against have supported the right to privacy and have opposed extreme abortion bans."

Eskamani warned that "we won't be truly free until everyone can make decisions about their own bodies, lives, reproductive care, and futures," which is why she vowed that Democrats "will continue to fight like hell against this ban."
