DeSantis Reaffirms He Will Sign a Constitutional Carry Bill

Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has reaffirmed to Floridians that he supports constitutional carry and wishes to sign a bill concerning the issue later this year.

Despite recent statements from President Joe Biden (D) declaring that he plans to ban assault weapons “come hell or high water,” Gov. DeSantis on multiple occasions has stood his ground while simultaneously pointing out the fact that he cannot do anything until Florida Legislature sends a bill to his desk.

Moreover, Gov. DeSantis included his opinion on the controversial gun legislation a few months ago that was signed by former Governor Rick Scott (R-FL) following the Parkland massacre which raised the minimum age to buy a firearm from 18 to 21 in the state of Florida.

“There was a massive gun control bill enacted prior to me becoming Governor. I was the candidate, I was not in office, it was signed by my predecessor, and I said, if that had come, I would have vetoed it, because I thought that it was violating due process and I thought it violating people’s second amendment rights,” stated DeSantis months ago.

The DeSantis administration’s Press Secretary, Brian Griffin replied to The Floridian's request for comment. stating, “The Governor strongly supports the constitutional right of Americans to bear arms, and he has repeatedly stated publicly that he hopes to sign constitutional carry legislation this year.”

Griffin is not wrong about DeSantis stating multiple times that he plans to sign a constitutional carry bill should it grace his desk in Tallahassee.

In November of 2022, a massive 19-point win reelected DeSantis to a second term and brought a Republican supermajority to the Florida Legislature.

In December, once again, DeSantis was approached about constitutional carry. He looked over at Florida House Speaker Paul Renner with this newly embedded supermajority and both men agreed that they are that ready to get the bill done.
