Wasserman Schultz Says Biden Baited Republicans During State of the Union

Share

President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address brought the ever-divided U.S. Congress together in the lower chamber, and while Republicans dismissed the President’s speech as being disingenuous and lacking real substance, House Democrats like Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz praised the “happy warrior” and his legislative accomplishments during his first two years in office.

“This was a very vigorous, really optimistic speech, one that he talked about all that we’ve accomplished,” said Rep. Wasserman Schultz in speaking to The Floridian after the address.

Rep. Wasserman Schultz listed the Inflation Reduction Act, infrastructure legislation, and the creation of 12 million jobs, as some of those major accomplishments before emphasizing the President’s willingness to work with the Republican Majority in the House of Representatives to finish the agenda he began when he was sworn in as the 46th President of the United States.

“Laying out all the accomplishments was important, and then he kept stressing that we need to finish the job, and we need to work together to accomplish that,” said Wasserman Schultz.  “He did a really good strong job of hitting all the things that were important for us to underscore about what we have accomplished.”

Texas Rep. Pete Sessions (R) told The Floridian that President Biden specifically told Republicans that we were not willing to work with them.

Wasserman Schultz did call out her Republican colleagues, adding that President Biden “kept throwing down the gauntlet and challenging them on working with his administration.

“They sat on their hands on things as basic as making sure that we can create more jobs, and that we can lower prescription drug costs, and they wouldn’t even applaud that they (Democrats) lowered the deficit. They totally took the bait,” added Wasserman Schultz.

“He baited them into saying that weren’t going to cut Social Security and Medicare when clearly a large number of Republicans support privatizing Social Security and Medicare.”-Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz

Wasserman concluded her remarks by reiterating that House Republicans “took the bait and they walked right into it.”

“It was classic Joe Biden and the Republicans took the bait, and they walked right into it, but I’m hopeful and confident that anyone that can win over enough people to get stuff done is Joe Biden,” she added.
