Wasserman-Schultz Compares DeSantis to Socialist Dictators

The historical cruelties of socialism are too great to deny. As such, the House passes a resolution condemning the ideology. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz nonetheless uses this as an opportunity to take a shot at Governor Ron DeSantis.

"Socialist tyrants in Cuba and Venezuela deserve condemnation, but today’s resolution fails to list their worst abuses and ignores wannabe autocrats like @GovRonDeSantis, who mimic their tactics by stifling voting and banning speech, books, and history," Rep. Wasserman-Schultz tweets.

In the House floor video clip accompanying her tweet, Wasserman-Schultz says she stands "to condemn all socialist autocrats who place power and wealth above their own citizens."

So far, so good.

"Yet this resolution ignores some of their worst evils, then falls silent while American leaders mimic cruel tactics," she continues. Wasserman-Schultz cites an example that "Cubans and Venezuelans suffer from far worse than the inflation and expropriation this measure describes." Specifically, she refers to how "dictators destroy human rights, the rule of law, and jail, exile, or kill their enemies."

While Wasserman-Schultz agrees the crimes committed in the name of socialism should rightfully be condemned, she claims nonetheless that "leaders on this very floor seek to overturn democratic elections, confiscate long-held rights, and gut programs our families, veterans, and service members need."

This is the point at which Wasserman-Schultz explicitly refers to DeSantis, if not by name; as an "aspiring autocrat" who "daily deploys the socialist tyrant's playbook."

She says DeSantis supposedly "marginalizes minorities, demonizes the free press, and criminalizes or bans speech, books, even history."

Wasserman-Schultz concludes that despots provide lessons "to respect the rule of law, free speech, and free elections; and to protect our own citizens from the grinding poverty tyrants wield as weapons."

"Socialist dictators deserve our scorn,"  Wasserman Schultz adds. "But glossing over their crimes and ignoring the leaders right here who mimic them, that fails those fighting for freedom everywhere."
