Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R) has taken to social media to give an update on the debacle for Speaker of the House. In a post, the freshman congresswoman slammed the “extraordinary amount of information” surrounding the votes that took place yesterday. In an effort to set the record straight, she explained what her position is and what Republicans want from a Speaker of the House.
Yesterday, Republicans denied California Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R) the Speaker of the House role three times. With the majority of Republicans supporting McCarthy for Speaker, a select few have mounted an opposition campaign for Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan (R), arguing that McCarthy represents the status quo that has not worked for the American people thus far.
On social media, Paulina Luna addressed followers amidst the debate, saying, "I have made my position clear, and it remains the same as when you elected me: I will stand strong until we get a Speaker who will fight for the American people and fix the chaos and corruption in our nation's Capitol."
She went on to comment on Republican dissent, expressing that "right now, democracy is at work - something that hasn't happened for decades. The process may be messy, but that is how it is supposed to be. The alternative - a swift uniparty vote without room for debate or conservative ideas - is far worse."
Affirming that this internal conflict will not lead to Democrats having control of Congress, she explained that she wasn't elected "to conduct business as usual or bow to the notion that this is just 'how things are done in DC.'"
"This is the same mentality that has failed Americans time and time again. It is why our children will suffer and why we have continued to see the broken economy snowball, among a host of other problems," she warned.
