Salazar Votes to Protect Small Businesses From IRS

Republicans continued pressing forward in their opposition against the Internal Revenue Service. Florida Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R) voted "Yes" for the Family and Small Business Taxpayer Protection Act.

The bill denies the IRS from funding 87,000 additional IRS agents. Republicans argued that this would eventually lead to more frequent audits on Americans.

In a statement, Rep. Salazar commented that “a free economy requires a tax system that takes only what is necessary, and no more.” She praised the bill, further arguing that “the IRS shouldn’t fill its coffers at the expense of working families and small businesses who cannot afford to fight 87,000 IRS agents," adding that the legislation would "grant taxpayers in my district the liberty to create wealth and prosperity without having to fear the IRS.”

House Republicans overwhelmingly voted to repeal funding for the IRS that would hire 87,000 new employees. The funding was controversial at the time of its introduction, and House Republicans opposed it heading into the November election. The funding has now been repealed with Republicans voting against it while Democrats voted to keep it in place.

Former Governor of South Carolina Nikki Haley (R), who's largely speculated to be launching a 2024 presidential bid, took to social media to criticize Democrats for voting in favor of the funding.

"Remember when the left gave the IRS $80 billion to hire tens of thousands of new employees?" Haley questioned.

Rep. Elvira Salazar and her colleagues introduced the bill, H.R. 23, "rescinds all new IRS funding designed to sequester wealth from middle-class families and small businesses across our nation" according a press release from Elvira Salazar's office.

"The IRS should work on behalf of all Americans, not against them," Elvira Salazar urged.
