Donalds: No, Republicans Aren't Cutting Social Security and Medicare

The congressional debate over raising the debt ceiling continues. House Democrats claim Republicans intend to cut Medicare and Social Security.

Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL-19) sets the record straight for his fellow House Republicans in a recent appearance on Fox Business.

"There are no considerations AT ALL for reforms to Social Security & Medicare when it comes to the debt ceiling. Dems & the WH are trying to make it about Social Security to scare people. We are talking about reforms to spending through non-defense discretionary dollars!" Rep. Donalds states.

Rep. Donalds goes on  to say that not only are there no considerations to reforming Medicare and Social Security, but "these are two different conversations."

Additionally, the goal of this apparent scare tactic by Democrats is to get people "into thinking that Republicans are engaged in some subterfuge." However, this is not the case as Donalds clarifies that "what we are talking about is reforms to spending through non-defense discretionary dollars, which have been increased substantially by the Democrats when they were in full control of this place [Congress] for the last two years."

Last week, former President Donald Trump notably made a post on Truth Social with a strong message to Republicans. "Under no circumstances should Republicans vote to cut a single penny from Medicare or Social Security to help pay for Joe Biden’s reckless spending spree, which is more reckless than anybody’s ever done or had in the history of our country," he warns. "While we absolutely need to stop Biden’s out of control spending, the pain should be borne by Washington bureaucrats, not by hard-working American families and American seniors," Trump adds.

Hence why earlier this week Rep. Donalds stressed the importance of negotiations occurring in the above link, because Congress should be able to do "business in the open, so that everybody can see what we're requesting, and you can demonstrate who's being fiscally responsible and who is not."
