With now-Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) officially taking on the role he has been fighting tooth and nail for, what's next for the new Republican House majority? Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL-18) penned a letter where he urged his colleagues stay in the current legislative session and not recess, by calling upon his own experience as a combat veteran.
"In combat, we don’t quit when we're tired, or hungry, or want to see our families. We step off the battlefield when the mission is accomplished and not before. We’re calling on the House to stay in session until we deliver for the American people," stated Rep. Mast.
In the attached letter, Rep.Mast makes it clear that his fellow Republicans must continue establishing their foothold in the House. The first step, he says, is to set committee ratios through the Republican Steering Committee. Next, he calls for "marathon committee hearings, briefings, and markups so that we can deliver for the American people."
By this, Mast demands Republicans do the following: repeal funding for 87,000 new IRS agents "as we promised on Day 1," send the Senate a new term limits bill, secure the border by requiring completion of the border wall and fund Border Patrol, pass a balanced budget amendment to curb inflation, and finally take steps towards implementing the Florida Parental Rights bill nationwide, "to send a message to woke educators that they will no longer be allowed to indoctrinate our children."
Mast concludes his letter by saying that "under Democrat control, the House continually missed its deadlines, delayed action on major issues, and rushed critical legislation through in the dark of night after months of procrastination."
However, he says the new Republican majority should demonstrate that things will be different, earning back the trust of the American people and putting the country on a better track.
"Let's take advantage of that opportunity and work day and night to correct course. Let's refuse to quit until the mission is complete. The American people deserve nothing less," added Mast.
Congressman Cory Mills was the only other Floridian to sign Mast's letter.
