While December 7th is the anniversary of Pearl Harbor, it is also the anniversary for something that millions of Americans can relate to.  Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (D-FL-23) is breast cancer free as of December 7th.

To celebrate this milestone, she spoke about her efforts to introduce and pass legislation related to battling the illness.

Taking to Twitter, Rep. Wasserman-Schultz tweeted: "My battle to #BeatCancer began 15 years ago today. I’ve dedicated my career to helping women catch breast cancer early and beat this disease by passing life-saving laws. I'm grateful to be cancer-free, and every day I'll use my voice and vote to promote screenings and save lives."

"Beating cancer was only the beginning of the journey of cancer survivorship for me," she describes in the footage. "It became my mission to help other overcome this disease and make it a cornerstone of my legislative agenda." Wasserman-Schultz describes how "education, awareness, early detection, prevention, survivorship, all of those are part of the moving parts of advocacy and legislative focus."

Moreover, she adds that "many priorities in my policy agenda are aimed at enhancing and protecting access to early screenings."

Furthermore, Wasserman-Schultz says it is "equally important to that goal is ensuring that there is sufficient, correct, and available information, both for survivors and providers alike."

Cancer is a bipartisan issue, affecting individuals from all walks of life and political leanings.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) lost his father to it in 2010, while Florida First Lady Casey DeSantis has recently won her own battle with breast cancer.

Dr. Miguel Fernandez of Aetna Healthcare recently spoke about what his group was doing for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and commended Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick's (D-FL-23) promotion of the Cervical Cancer Elimination Day of Action.
