President Joe Biden (D) took a trip to Fort Myers, Florida this week to meet with officials regarding the aftermath of Hurricane Ian. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) and Florida Senators Rick Scott (R) and Marco Rubio (R) among other officials were surveying Fort Myers as President Biden visited.
During a press conference in Fort Myers, President Biden vowed that the federal government will do anything in its power to make sure that Florida recovers.
"What the governor has done is pretty remarkable so far. ... The biggest thing the governor has done ... [is] recognized there's this thing called global warming," said President Biden.
Both DeSantis and Biden have been at odds since Biden was inaugurated, and there is speculation that DeSantis is a potential 2024 presidential rival. However, both figures set aside politics, and Biden even praised DeSantis over his handling of the Hurricane response.
Moreover, speaking to the public, Biden assured that the federal government has “one job and only one job, and that’s to make sure the people in Florida get everything they need to fully, thoroughly recover."
Governor DeSantis also shared some words, praising the state's collaboration with the federal government.
“We are cutting through the red tape and that’s from local government, state government, all the way up to the president," DeSantis said, expressing that Florida appreciates "the team effort."
Similarly, President Donald Trump (R) also spoke at an "America First" event.
During his speech, Trump praised Florida for its response to the "monster Hurricane."
"Our hearts ache for every person who's home was damaged or destroyed, for every community that has been so horribly ravaged and for every family that has lost a precious loved one, " Trump shared.
Trump remains another speculated 2024 hopeful, and the meeting between DeSantis and Biden comes as DeSantis maintains a lead over Florida Rep. Charlie Crist (D) in the polls.
“We appreciate working together across various levels of government," said DeSantis, Biden standing at his side, and the Florida Governor thanked Biden for committing to cover 100% of the cost of debris removal.
