DeSantis Thanks 26 States for Hurricane Ian Support

Share

Florida has been greatly affected by Hurricane Ian, with hundreds reported to have died in Lee County according to that county's sheriff.  With footage being shared across social media, and with reporters braving the effects of the storm to bring up-to-date coverage, Floridians and the country have been watching for the first sign that the coast is clear. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) has provided an update, thanking 26 states for extending support as Florida continues to face Hurricane Ian.

As Hurricane Ian struck , Governor DeSantis requested that President Joe Biden (D) approve a Major Disaster Declaration, which would include that the federal government commit to a 100% cost share for the consequences of the Hurricane.

Governor DeSantis has now provided an update to Floridians, commenting that 26 states have reached out to support, and the states include Tennessee, Virginia, Montana, New York, Colorado, Indiana New Jersey, Georgia, and Governor DeSantis informed that Alabama Governor Kay Ivey (R) has committed to “sending some black hawk helicopters to help.”

“Governor Bill Lee in Tennessee fast tracked a request that we had,” DeSantis commented, adding that he had spoken to Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards (D), who shared that they’ve “got a lot of experience in hurricanes recently.”

The Florida Governor followed up by taking to social media to warn Floridians to keep guard in light of the storm.

“After Hurricane Ian passes, be careful going outside,” DeSantis warned, explaining that Floridians should “make sure to avoid downed power lines, avoid standing water, stay clear of trees, do not drive in standing water and keep generators 20 feet outside of your home.”

The hurricane has devastated Cuba, and the entire island is now without power.

In Florida, the hurricane has now dwindled to a tropical storm after striking Florida through Cayo Costa with winds of 150 mph.
