Scott Calls on Republicans to Vote on Debt Cancellation Accountability Act

This past week, President Biden (D) announced a new initiative to cancel billions of dollars of student loan debt. This will only increase the tax burden on working-class Americans. Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) is at the forefront in fighting this plan. On Tuesday, Scott heightened his calls for fellow Republicans to vote for the Debt Cancellation Accountability Act.

This Act will require the Department of Education to get express approval from Congress to to cover any federal student loans they want paid for or reduced to two or more borrowers in an amount greater than $1 million, rather than on a case-by-case basis. Any previous "targeted loan forgiveness programs" that are granted to a single borrower who is eligible for loan forgiveness will be an exception. Scott calls the passage of this bill a means to "force every member of Congress to go on the record for student loan forgiveness."

"President Biden and Democrats in Washington have turned their backs on hardworking American families," Scott says in his press release. The first instance, he says, is in the expansion of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) by 87,000 agents, "an unknown number of which will be armed." The second, of course, is the student loan forgiveness plan. Scott emphasizes this initiative is "doubling down" by Biden and Democrats' apparent contempt for taxpayers, using "hundreds of billions of YOUR tax dollars to ‘forgive’ the loans of college-educated individuals who voluntarily took on debt to finance their education."

In addition to the Debt Cancellation Accountability Act, Scott is calling for votes in favor of his COLLEGE Act. This, as The Floridian detailed, would force universities to take a more active role in helping students pay off loan debt. Furthermore, he also calls for support in repealing the aforementioned expansion of the IRS.

Scott concludes saying that "families in Florida and across the country will not tolerate more radical government overreach, and I will do whatever it takes to deliver the accountability they deserve.”
