Florida Rep. Val Demings (D) has campaigned to amass support to unseat Florida Senator Marco Rubio (R). However, this week, Demings’ candidacy was finalized as she officially filed to run for the Florida Senate. Though Democrats are hopeful that Demings can defeat Rubio in November, the Rubio campaign continues to dismiss her candidacy, calling her “a far-left radical” that will not become a Florida Senator.
The Rubio campaign released a message to supporters, accusing Demings of having gone "to Washington and abandoned the people of Florida" by voting and supporting a number of policies the Rubio team feels have been detrimental to the state of Florida.
The list includes:
In a statement, Elizabeth Gregory, the communications director for Marco Rubio for Senate, argued that the Florida Democrat “is on the wrong side of every issue that affects the day-to-day lives of Floridians," adding that "Demings went to Washington and immediately catered to the liberal elite instead of getting things done for Florida: her only accomplishment in Washington is renaming two post offices.”
"As Election Day approaches, Floridians will get to know Val Demings as a far-left radical who has failed to deliver results for them when it really counts,” Gregory added.
Most recently, Rep. Demings commented that gun control would be an important topic that she would discuss leading up to the November election. The senatorial hopeful will also challenge Rubio on his abortion views.
