Florida School District Bans Bookbags over Potential Security Threat

Fort Lauderdale— Parents with school-age children that attend schools within the Broward County School District have been told that as of Tuesday June 7^th, “no bookbags and backpacks will be permitted in any school building” as the school district may have received a credit threat (s) of violence that could take place in the last days of the school year.

The message to parents went out in form of voicemail and email, and asserted that the school board was banning bookbags in “an abundance of caution for security reasons.”

The ban also includes teachers and anyone employed by any school within the district.

Students must return any “devices or books” that need to be returned by Monday June 6^th.

School officials have not confirmed that they have received any credible threats that have prompted them to activate this extreme safety protocol.

Since the Uvalde, Texas school shooting, a number of credible threats against schools have been reported and thwarted.
