Florida Lawmaker Supports Total Abortion Ban if Roe v. Wade is Overturned

Roe v. Wade's impending status after the SCOTUS draft opinion leak has left Americans clinging to the edge of their seats.  Striking down the landmark federal case would leave the abortion issue to all 50 states.  Florida State Rep. Spencer Roach (R-76) says he would support an all-out ban of abortion in Florida.

If Roe v. Wade is to be overturned, the practice of abortion would not be federally criminalized but left up to each individual state to decide.  In fact, a number of states have statutes already imposed to instantaneously ban abortion in the event Roe is overturned by the Supreme Court called, "trigger bans."

While Florida is not one of these states with a trigger ban on abortion, the state passed a measure last legislative session to create the infamous 15-week abortion ban.  Now with Florida looking more Republican than ever, now would be a prime opportunity for the pro-life lobby to seek out an all-out ban of the medical practice.

The Floridian sat down with conservative legislator, Rep. Spencer Roach, who has won his primary and general reelection unopposed.  When asked about the future of Roe. v Wade and abortion in Florida, the representative responded, "Florida is now a red state, we're getting redder, and I think that our constituents are going to and should demand, and I think Florida will be one of those states to ban abortion out right.  And I would support that."

Although Roach is eager to ban abortion in Florida, he is clearly unsure if the draft opinion will hold as the Court's final opinion.

When asked what he thinks about the outcome the representative claims, "I don't know on two fronts."  Roach added, "I have no idea what stage that draft opinion written was in, who wrote it, how many justices will join that opinion, so I don't know if that will be the final opinion.  I hope it is, I think it will be, but I do not know that for sure.  Then two, I think all of these tactics the left has engaged in are designed to intimidate justices and get them to change their opinions.  I don't know if that will have an effect on the justices or not."

Representative Roach made a name for himself during his last term in office by fully embracing Gov Ron DeSantis' political and legislative agenda.  Roach arguably became one of the most avid supporters of Florida's transgender female sports ban that was signed into law in 2021.  The South Florida Representative even threw himself into the discussion and subsequent battle over Critical Race Theory and public school education.
