Scott, Schumer Engage on Twitter Over School Safety Legislation

It appears that America has a new Twitter beef. No, it’s not athletes or rappers or celebrities, but U.S. Senators. Since the recent school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, politicians have been quick to jump to blame the other side.

However, Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) introduced a bill in effort to make schools safter. Some on the left would say it doesn’t do enough due to the fact it does not mention gun legislation at all. But credit to the Senator, he introduced something following the tragedy.

The Floridian reported Wednesday that Rick Scott and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) promoted a bipartisan bill with Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) called the Luke and Alex School Safety Act that “establishes a Federal Clearinghouse on School Safety Best Practices” that will recommend “comprehensive school safety measures, including threat prevention, preparedness, protection, mitigation, incident response, and recovery to improve the safety posture of a school upon implementation.”

In an era with a Congressional approval rating at 22% and a disapproval rating at 68%, in an era where people yell and scream for the sluggish Congress to “Do something!” (Objectively, the polling warrants this response), Senator Rick Scott at least did something.

However, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said that “we need real solutions” in a tweet that throws some shots at the Scott/Johnson bill.

“GOP Sen. Johnson just tried for a bill that could see more guns in schools – I blocked it. The truth: There were officers at the school in Texas. The shooter got past them. We need real solutions – We will vote on gun legislation starting with the Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act.”

Scott did not take too kindly to these words. In directly responded with a tweet of his own:

“This was a bill I worked on with the parents of Parkland victims. It’s named after them. You’re a liar and a hack.”

So far, the Democratic Senator has not responded.
