On Tuesday in Uvalde, Texas, a gunman opened fire on an elementary school, killing 21 people. 19 of them were children. The shooter was 18 years old and was compromised by law enforcement. Since the mass shooting took place, gun rights, gun legislation, and gun confiscation has been the topic of conversation. This conversation has been divisive, naturally.
However, in possibly a slight moment of cohesion, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) are promoting the bipartisan Luke & Alex School Safety Act. The bill “shall establish a Federal Clearinghouse on School Safety Best Practices” that will recommend “comprehensive school safety measures, including threat prevention, preparedness, protection, mitigation, incident response, and recovery to improve the safety posture of a school upon implementation.”
Both Rubio and Scott tweeted out their support for the bill on Wednesday:
“The horrific tragedy in Texas should spur Congress to act on proposals that can pass & actually make a difference like our bipartisan Luke & Alex School Safety Act #SafeSchoolsForAll”
Rick Scott announcement included a shot at Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) as well.
“After the horrific shooting in Uvalde, I spoke in support of my, @SenRonJohnson, @marcorubio, @ChuckGrassely & @SenatorRisch’s Luke and Alex School Safety Act. This would help create safer schools to prevent another tragedy. @SenSchumer blocked this commonsense bill’s passage.”
At the same time, Rep. Val Demings (D-FL) sent out a tweet that was directed most likely at GOP Senators in response to the tragedy in Texas.
“Another school shooting. I can hardly speak. Every parent in America should be mad as hell that the Senators of the greatest country in the world have chosen not to do a damn thing about innocent people gunned down in innocent places. Praying for the victims at Robb Elementary.”
Demings is running against Marco Rubio for his Senate seat in the upcoming midterm election.
The Floridian’s thoughts and prayers are with the victims, the victim’s families, and all those affected by the senseless violence in Uvalde, Texas.
