The latest SCOTUS leak has stirred up plenty of controversy, but contrary to rhetoric in the mainstream media, Republicans are now polling at a record high since the Supreme Court's draft opinion on overturning the landmark case, Roe v. Wade was first leaked.
When Americans were polled by CNN on whether they supported Republicans over Democrats, Republicans already saw an expected advantage. Now, after the Roe v. Wade leak, Republicans are now sitting on a comfortable 7-point advantage over Democrats going into the 2022 midterm elections.
Democrats, often credit abortion rights as one of their winning issues, but many commentators are starting to rethink this idea. Republicans like US Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL) have torn into abortion shortly after the leak occurred.
Rep. Mast took to Twitter where he claimed, "I fought on battlefields to protect the innocent and uphold the Constitution. Abortion does neither." The congressman added, "As a soldier, I’ve seen what true evil looks like. But as a father, I’ve seen pure innocence. There’s no doubt in my mind that every heartbeat of an innocent child is worth protecting."
Mast commented on the draft opinion, saying it has, "the opportunity to protect millions of vulnerable, unborn babies, and it is undoubtedly the right one."
The Republican-led Florida Legislature has been consistent in battling the practice of abortion. Just this session the Florida legislature passed a measure to limit abortion procedures to the first 15 weeks of pregnancy, a bill that many Democrats claimed was too radical, and Republicans believed did not go far enough.
