Mayor Levine Cava Issues Statement on Cyclists Deaths

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava has issued a statement regarding the tragic killing of two cyclists on the Rickenbacker Causeway. Informing that her administration is “working hard to make critical updates to our infrastructure to enhance cyclists and pedestrian safety,” Mayor Levine Cava updated that the accident is currently being investigated by the Miami Dade County Police Department.

Over the weekend, a driver behind the wheel of a jeep struck two cyclists in what is being called a "horrible accident."

Michael Vega, the Miami Dade Police Spokesman commented that the driver "wasn't under the unfluence," adding that "it looks like this is just a terrible accident."

In response to the deaths, Miami Dade County Mayor Levine Cava issued a statement, providing an update on what her administration is pursuing to ensure that cyclists and pedestrians are safe.

"We must... continue to expand enforcement on roadways and increase road education to prevent serious accidents and fatalities," said Levine Cava, adding that "this is why we invested over $15 million in last year's budget in pedestrian and cyclist safety, and why Miami-Dade has joined Vision Zero - a comprehensive approach dedicated to eliminating traffic fatalities and injuries, which has been implemented across the world."

The Mayor's statement was released on social media where she expressed that she has been committed "to expanding cyclist safety" throughout her time in office. Citing her own loss as a motivator to ensure that public safety is strengthened, Mayor Levine Cava shared her story of her husband being the victim of "a hit-and-run accident while cycling in 2018."

"To our entire community, this tragedy is a stark reminder that we all have a part to play in sharing the road safety," she said, noting that "Miami-Dade County will continue to work alongside stakeholders at the city and state level and members of the cycling community to promote solutions that make our roads safer for all residents and visitors."
