The $40 billion aid package to Ukraine that was approved just days ago has divided Americans (mostly conservatives) throughout the country. Is defending countries from an enemy that we also consider an enemy putting America first? Are enemies of our enemies truly our friends?
As we look throughout history, the United States and the Allied Powers worked with the Soviets (while maintaining a close eye on them) during World War II. The U.S. supported the Mujahideen during the mid-80’s, this time against the Soviets and their invasion of Afghanistan.
Now, this article is not insinuating Ukraine is a power that will eventually turn against the United States. However, due to the historical trend, there are people in the U.S. and members of Congress believe that Americans deserve transparency when it comes to the taxpayer’s footing of the bill of a large aid package.
Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) fields this opinion. He stated in a tweet in support of Rep. Yvette Herrell (R-NM) who said her goal was to “establish oversight and accountability for billions in funds and weaponry the Biden administration to a foreign conflict.”
“The American people deserve full transparency as to how the Biden administration is spending their hard-earned tax dollars. I’m proud to join @RepHerrell in this effort to introduce oversight as to how this admin is spending billions of taxpayer funds to aid Ukraine.”
The letter in which the twenty-two Republicans voted no on the aid package asks questions such as “Has the U.S. discovered whether any weapons previously provided to Ukraine were diverted from their intended recipients or stolen? Have any of the weapons fallen in the hands of criminals or terrorists?” The letter goes on to ask, “Will the (Biden) administration commit to the creation of a special monitor to ensure that funds sent under this and other paid packages to Ukraine are not subject to waste, fraud, and abuse and comply with all Arms Export Control Act requirements?”
While the world has moved on to other stories, the invasion of Ukraine still rages on.
