CAPE CORAL, FL. – In South Florida today, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) announced the future enactment of the Florida Hometown Heroes Housing Program which is designed to help Floridians who have helped served the state and the nation, buy their first home. The $100 million program is under the direction of the Florida Housing and Finance Corporation (Florida Housing).
The DeSantis Staff said in a release that the program is “available to Floridians including law enforcement officers, firefighters, educators, healthcare professionals, childcare employees, and active military or veterans.” In total, the program helps over “50 critical professions” throughout the state. According to the release, Florida Housing “was created by the Legislature 40 years ago. We are the state’s housing finance agency (HFA) that administers state and federal resources to help provide affordable homeownership and rental housing options for the citizens of Florida.”
“In Florida, we value the contributions of our police, firefighters, teachers, and nurses,” said the Governor. “Our hometown heroes are the backbone of Florida communities and making sure that they can afford to be homeowners is a great way to give back to them and support the future of the American Dream.”
The program itself will “aid essential community workers in 50 different eligible professions with down payment and closing cost assistance to help first-time, income-qualified homebuyers purchase a primary residence in the communities they serve.” The program starts June 1st.
The Daily Wire reported that “the 30-year mortgage rate reached 5% rendering homeownership more expensive for American families. According to government-backed mortgage company Freddie Mac, a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage rose 0.28% in a single week and nearly 2% since April of last year.”
“As Americans content with historically high inflation, the combination of rising mortgage rates, elevated home prices and tight inventory are making the pursuit of homeownership the most expensive in a generation,” stated the government-backed organization.
