This week, Florida Rep. Val Demings (D) made a campaign stop in Little Haiti, but beforee taking the stage to speak to supporters, the senatorial hopeful received news of the tragic shooting that took place in a Uvalde elementary school in Texas. In response to the shooting, Demings called for more gun control while also criticizing Florida Senator Marco Rubio (R) as a "do-nothing senator."
"I'm sick and tired of innocent people being gunned down in innocent places," said Demings, speaking to around 50 supporters at the Little Haiti Cultural Center.
in response to the elementary school shooting, a number of Democrats have vocally expressed the need for gun control while Republican lawmakers have argued the opposite.
Senator Rubio, whom Demings is looking to unseat in November, was also the subject of criticism in her campaign stop. The Florida Democrat commented that Rubio has done nothing in office to help avert concerns with guns in the United States.
"There's legislation sitting in the Senate right now that the Senate, not the Democratic members, but the Republican members including Marco Rubio, refuses to address," Demings expressed, adding that Rubio "will be quick - right now he's silent - but he will be quick to offer, I'm sure a scripture. Or maybe some thoughts and prayers."
On Twitter, Rubio took issue with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D) after the bipartisan Luke & Alex School Safety Act was blocked. Rubio expressed on the social media platform that "the horrific tragedy in Texas should spur Congress to act on proposals that can pass & actually make a difference like our bipartisan Luke & Alex School Safety Act."
On Twitter, Demings also shared her thoughts regarding school shootings in America, lamenting that proper action has not taken place in order to address the issue.
"It has been 10 years since Sandy Hook and zero meaningful gun safety bills have passed the senate," Demings shared.
