Scott Warns of Iran’s Support of Russia

Share

Although Americans find themselves politically divided at home, Republicans and Democrats both applauded President Joe Biden’s (D) comments on Ukraine in his State of the Union address. After the United Nation’s General Assembly resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, 141 countries voted in favor of condemning Russia while 35 countries abstained. In response, Florida Senator Rick Scott (R) criticized Iran, calling to attention the relationship the support Iran has shown towards Russia.

After the UN General Assembly’s vote, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky championed the vote on social media, writing that he was “grateful to everyone & every state that voted in favor,” saying that they “have chosen the right side of history.”

Moreover, he said that the vote shows “that a global anti-Putin coalition has been formed and is functioning. The world is with us. The truth is on our side.”

China abstained from voting, and Serbia, a country that has a close relationship with Russia, also voted in favor of the condemnation, but Iran did not vote.

Countries that voted against condemning Russia were North Korea, Belarus, Eritrea, and Syria along with Russia.

However, Senator Scott took issue with Iran’s response, taking to social media to comment on the relationship Iran shares with Russia.

“Iran’s supporting Putin’s unlawful invasion of Ukraine,” he said on social media, adding that “Russia supports Iran even as they chant ‘Death to America’ & try to destroy Israel.”

Directing comments to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Scott asked him to “explain why this admin is still trying to rejoin the failed Iran deal with these gross regimes?”

The Iran Nuclear Deal was heavily criticized by former President Donald Trump (R), who vocally opposed it. GOP members also voiced their opposition, and their concerns have grown as the Biden Administration once again looks for a similar deal with Iran.
