Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) signed the controversial Parental Rights in Education Bill in Holly Hill, Florida, today. Known by some as the “Don’t Say Gay bill,” the hosts of the Oscars showed their displeasure Sunday night when they declared:
“-and for you people in Florida, we’re going to have a gay night.”
DeSantis, perhaps in response to the clip mentioned above, was asked to give a response to Hollywood’s resentment of the bill. He said this at his press conference following the signing of the legislation.
“There’s even people in Hollywood that are opposed to providing protections for parents and enforcing parent’s rights. You know, the one thing I’ll say about that is if the people who held up degenerates like Harvey Weinstein as exemplars and as heroes and as all that, if those are the types of people that are opposing us on parent’s rights, I wear that like a badge of honor.”
Florida legislators such as Anthony Sabatini (R-FL), stated in a tweet
“Hollywood is a disgusting and horrible place full of terrible people”
And in response to Disney’s condemnation of the bill, he also stated
“Any Republican running for office in Florida that does not strongly CONDEMN this Woke, leftist, anti-family, anti-parent company should be DESTROYED in the primary election this year.”
Democrats were not silent however. Rep. Val Demings (D-FL) stated,
“It’s disgraceful that the “Don’t Say Gay” bill was signed into law today. We must make Florida welcoming to everyone – and I continue to stand strong with the LGBTQ+ community. To those that have supported this shameful bill: Keep our kids out of our partisan political games," stated Rep. Demings.
The main focus of the bill is that
“Classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in according with state standards.”
