Diaz-Balart Slams ‘Aggressive Democratic Gerrymandering’

Florida Rep. Mario Diaz Balart (R) is weighing in on the redistricting battle in Florida and across the United States, accusing Democrats of “aggressive Democratic gerrymandering.” In speaking to The Floridian over the weekend, the Florida Republican commented on whether or not redistricting could result in a ‘red wave’ in the upcoming 2022 midterm election.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) has been at odds with Democrats over his redistricting proposal. State Senator Annette Taddeo (D) slammed his proposal, arguing that DeSantis only offered it for future political aspirations, citing a presidential campaign that DeSantis has been speculated on taking.

“He did that map for Iowa and New Hampshire. I hope he didn’t do that map for Floridians,” said Taddeo.

Commenting on the redistricting battle, Rep. Diaz Balart shared that he doesn’t believe that redistricting will result in a “red wave,” but he does believe that the current effort from Democrats is “dramatic, aggressive Democratic gerrymandering.”

Instead, the Florida lawmaker says that he believes Republicans will pick up the majority in the House because of the “ridiculous, left-wing, socialist policies of the left, of the Democrats.”

“I’m convinced that when it’s all said and done the Florida Legislature will do a fair and legal plan, and what you’re seeing however in states like Illinois and New York is dramatic, left wing, Democrat gerrymandering, which is why it looks like they’re picking up some seats around the country,” Diaz Balart added.

He explained that “the polls are showing that the American people are rejecting the far left, socialist agenda the Democrats are proposing.”

President Donald Trump (R), who’s expected to be heavily involved in the upcoming 2022 midterm election, has also commented on the redistricting battle between Republicans and Democrats.

However, in recent comments, President Trump directed blame at Minority House Leader Mitch McConnell (R).

In a statement over the weekend, Trump said that “Republicans are getting absolutely creamed with the phony redistricting going on all over the country,” adding that “the Old Broken-Down Crow, Mitch McConnell, sits back and does nothing to help the Party.”
