Washington, D.C.—Freshman Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R) will be filing an immigration reform measure in the U.S. House of Representatives in the coming weeks.
In an interview with The Floridian, Rep. Salazar said that she would be filing “The Dignity Act,” a 700-page bill she contends is “a massive immigration reform law” and that for the “first time in history, modern history, that a freshman alone in a congressional office, by myself, write such a massive bill.”
“It’s time for the GOP to send a message to the browns that we’re with you, that we want you to be with us because we have the values that are entrenched in our community—brown, Hispanic, Latino, whatever you want to call it. God-fearing, law-abiding, taxpaying, family-oriented, we want to live the American dream,” said Rep. Salazar. The Dignity Act, it’s a massive immigration reform law. The Brown Girl from the hood, with an accent, is going to bring it to, so I can help my people because my people are the ones who got me here, so those are the only people that I am thinking about.”
Salazar added that she believes that the current border crisis “has only damaged the Hispanic community” and that in order to address the illegal immigration problem in the U.S., the southern border with Mexico needed to be sealed first."
“What's happening at the border, what has happened during this year, has only damaged the Hispanic community,” added Salazar. So, I am taking, I'm going back to what's important and I'm solving what's urgent…So, seal the damn border, and then let's move order, the border and let's put order inside the house.”
From the looks of it, Salazar is poised to shore up many purist-type legal immigration proponents who did not support or do not her support her position on immigration reform, by asserting that her bill calls for the federal government to "seal the damn border" before implementing any of the provisions in her bill.
Without getting into details about what the bill actually includes, Salazar, said that her new bill would include “border security, agricultural” and would “create a fund to retrain the American workers .”
The revamped Dignity Act will be introduced in early February.
