Rubio Slams 'Big Business' for Lobbying Against Uyghur Bill

Share

Last month, Florida Senator Marco Rubio (R) took to the Senate floor to lambast Democrats, blaming them and “a bunch of these corporations lobbying” against his Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act. The bill was blocked in the Senate after it had initially received unanimous support, and now Senator Rubio says that the effort is part of a ploy from “Big Business.”

After the bill was blocked, Senator Rubio took to Twitter to share his speech given on the Senate floor. On Twitter, Rubio wrote that “just a few weeks ago they all voted for it but now that American corporations doing businesses in China are lobbying hard to kill it they suddenly discovered a fake ‘procedural problem.’”

This week, the Florida lawmaker is once again addressing the bill by directing a message to supporters.

“After heavy lobbying from Joe Biden’s Administration, powerful CEOs and other Wall Street lobbyists, Democrats in Congress blocked my Uyghur Slave Labor Prevention Act for Months,” he said, questioning “why?”

For him, the bill was blocked “because it stop Big Business from importing goods made with slave labor into our country,” adding that “China and big corporations don’t like it, so they called their friends in Washington.”

The Florida Republican also commented on the upcoming Winter Olympics, sharing his disapproval of President Joe Biden’s (D) response.

“President Biden has announced a ‘diplomatic’ boycott  of the upcoming Winter Olympics, but all those big companies are still big-time sponsors of an Olympics held in the shadows of concentration camps.”

President Biden issued a call earlier this week for the United States to take a 'diplomatic boycott' from the Winter Olympics in response to human rights offenses in the country. A number of Democrats endorsed the President's response while GOP officials criticized it for not being strong enough against the Communist Chinese Party.
