While protecting Muslims from Islamophobia seems to be a top priority for Democrats, protecting them from genocide does not even come in a close second. Democrats blocked US Senator Rick Scott's (R-FL) and Senator Marco Rubio's (R-FL) anti-slavery bill to battle China's exploitation of the Uyghers.
Top Democrats such as US Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) have long called for the annexation of the Uyghers from slavery in China, however multiple opportunities proposed by Republicans to solve the issue, were shot down. The Democrats have put more focus on combating domestic Islamophobia.
The legislation crafted by the two Florida senators would, "keep products made with slave labor in Communist China out of the U.S. supply chain. Utterly despicable." According to Senator Scott:
Earlier this week, US Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) also attempted to amend Representative Omar's bill to include provisions to combat the Chinese abuses of the Uyghers. Unfortunately, this amendment along with 5 others was discarded.
Fortunately, Capitol Hill has not seen the last of this movement. Moments after news broke, Senator Rubio then promised to, "try and pass it again tomorrow." Rubio and Scott in particular have gained notoriety for being staunch critics of the CCP, even aside from the Uygher controversy.
