Rubio Accuses Demings of 'Election-Cycle Charade'

During President Donald Trump’s (R) term in office, the president received widespread scrutiny from political pundits and Democrats regarding his hardline approach to immigration. His idea of a southern border wall was a controversial solution, and it received pushback from Democrat lawmakers. In his Senatorial reelection campaign, Florida Senator Marco Rubio (R) is now criticizing Florida Rep. Val Demings (D), accusing her of taking part in “election-cycle charade” after the Florida Democrat tweeted last week that the United States needs to “secure the border and other points of entry.”

While commenting on the growing concern the U.S. faces regarding drug overdoses, the Orlando Democrat posted several solutions in order to combat the flow of drugs in the country. One of the solutions is receiving scrutiny from Senator Rubio and his team over the Democrat lawmaker’s criticism of past efforts to “secure the border.”

Rubio, in speaking to Fox News, said that Demings is exhibiting “election-cycle charade” when it comes to border security.

“Demings may be willing to do and say anything in order to win, but her record speaks for itself,” argued the Rubio campaign in a statement to Fox News Digital. “Demings supports illegal immigrants voting, sanctuary cities, and a pathway to citizenship for gang members and sexual abusers while she opposes the border wall and resources for border agencies.”

Demings is a long-time critic of President Trump, having called his southern border wall initiative “an absurd waste of money and a violation of our values as a nation of immigrants.” Moreover, Demings voted in favor of terminating his declaration of an emergency at the southern border.

Though a recent poll indicated that Senator Rubio is polling ahead of Demings among voters, the Florida GOP member maintains that Floridians have not yet met the "real Val Demings."
