Elvira Salazar Shows Support for Upcoming Protest in Cuba

Share

Florida Rep. Maria Elvira Alvarez (R) has been a staunch critic of the Castro regime since being elected to the U.S. House in 2020. The criticism continues this week as she championed the House for showing “solidarity to the brave and heroic Cuban people” ahead of another massive protest. It would mark the second-largest protest the island has experienced since July when the Cuban people took to the streets to march against the communist regime.

The protest is scheduled for November 15th, and the United States has already issued a warning, arguing that it would impose further sanctions should Cuba prosecute the promoters of the march.

Juan Gonzalez, President Joe Biden’s (D) main advisor on issues related to Latin America, commented on the issue in Late October, describing that “the future of Cuba is not going to be determined from Washington” and adding that “we are fully committed to supporting, backing and strengthening the voice of the Cuban people who want change.”

Lawmakers like Elvira Salazar have directed criticism at the president, expressing that President Biden has not done enough to show support to the Cuban people as the island faces political unrest. However, this week, the U.S. House expressed its “solidarity,” affirming that “the Castro’s regime’s days are numbered” and that both “the world is watching” and “history is watching.”

Taking to the floor of the House, the Florida Republican praised House Resolution 760, praising Florida Reps. Mario Diaz-Balart (R) and Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D) for leading a bipartisan effort that will denounce “the Cuban regime” and “supporting freedom for the people of Cuba.”

Imploring lawmakers to vote in favor of the resolution, Elvira Salazar argued that the Capitol supporting the archers is important because the Capitol is “the seat of power on this shining city on a hill.”
