CD 20 Democratic Primary Likely Going to Recount

Share

After months of campaigning to win the Democratic primary ‘Special Election’ in Florida’s 20th congressional district, the predominantly Black American voting constituency overwhelmingly rejected Progressive State Rep. Omari Hardy, but not another Progressive firebrand, Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick.

Cherfilus-McCormick has already openly stated that if elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, she would legislate with Progressives and has already made incendiary statements during the campaign.

"Until #BlackLivesMatter, how can everyone matter? Economic justice provides for social justice. A guaranteed income like Dr. King envisioned would give the poorest the boots they need to lift themselves up," tweeted Cherfilus-McCormack.

After Rep. Alcee Hastings (D) passed away after a long battle with Pancreatic cancer, Cherfilus-McCormick, Hardy, and 9 others decided to try to fill the big shoes of one of South Florida’s most controversial, yet beloved elected officials.

As of 11 pm, Broward County Commissioner Dale Holness, who is considered to be the most pragmatic of all the Democrats running,  and Cherfilus-McCormack were deadlocked with Cherfilus-McCormack leading Holness by 31 votes.

If this election result stands, or if it shifts by a few more votes, an automatic recount will take place.

Holness just told The Floridian that there are some 900 ballots in Broward that are yet to be counted, and that he would not be making a statement until those ballots were counted.

Holness just told reporters that several batches of votes would be coming in over the next couple of hours and that he felt comfortable with is chances of winning outright,

This story is developing…

The Republican primary race in this special election was a lot different.
