Shevrin Jones Named DNC At-Large Member

Florida state Senator Shevrin Jones (D) shared news over social media regarding a new leadership position in the DNC. The Florida Democrat shared that both President Joe Biden (D) and DNC Chair Jaime Harrison have nominated him to be a DNC At-Large Member.

As mentioned in a press release from Sen. Jones, to be named a DNC At-Large Member is “a leadership category to ensure that the Democratic Party reflects the people it intends to serve.”

In a statement, Jones expressed that he was “grateful for this exciting nomination and potential opportunity to work alongside President Biden, DNC Chair Harrison, and Democrats from across the country.”

Jones added that “as we look ahead to 2022 and beyond, it’s critically important that our Party continue to uplift diverse perspectives and voices, especially those who are too often overlooked or unheard, as we continue to deliver results for the American people.”

Further commenting on the nomination, Jones noted that “there’s great work to be done as we go into 2022, and I am up and ready for the challenge.”

The nomination comes at a time when Democrats in the Sunshine State are promoting a registration effort to drive up support in the upcoming 2022 election.

First reported by POLITICO’s Matt Dixon, “Republicans have nearly entirely eroded Democrat’s long-standing voter registration advantage, which at its peak was 700,000 when President Barack Obama won Florida in 2008.”

At the beginning of the year, “the lead for Democrats was down to roughly 100,000,” but now it “has further narrowed to 23,055 over the past eight months, according to August numbers.”

However, Democratic leadership still remains hopeful that registration will go up.

Last week, during a Zoom rally to celebrate National Voter Registration Day, a Florida Democratic organizer commented that the party has a goal of registering 150,000 Democrats, which they hope will lead them to victories in the upcoming midterm election.
