Elvira Salazar: Cuba Needs More Than 'Empty Words'

Share

Florida Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R) gave a speech on the House floor this week, accusing President Joe Biden (D) of only providing “empty words” in response to the crisis in Cuba.

Instead, Rep. Salazar demands that the Cuban people “need action!” In her speech, she asked for both the President and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D) to “stand with the Cubans now,” stressing the importance of the United States’ support because “Castrol has taken repression to scientific levels.”

On July 11, 2021, the Cuban people took to the streets to protest against the Castro regime. This surprised many, but support quickly came from South Florida as Floridians took to the streets to also protest against the Communist regime.

In response, lawmakers from both sides of the aisle expressed their support, but they also involved themselves in political discussions regarding the United States’ political relationship with Cuba.

In between the discussions, GOP members criticized the Biden Administration’s response to the political turmoil in Cuba, and the criticism has not simmered down.

“There are at this hour over 500 political prisoners and thousands more are in jail,” informed Rep. Elvira Salazar in her speech, adding that “The Castro regime has cut off the internet, so no one will see how they are torturing the Cuban people.” She added that “America has the technology to provide internet now in Cuba. We don’t need any study groups about remittances.”

This is an effort that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) has also supported while criticizing the Biden Administration.

“We need the president to grant the green light now, so the Cubans can organize among themselves and can stay in the streets, so they don’t feel abandoned,” asserted Elvira Salazar. And she concluded her speech by saying that the Cuban people should know that “the whole word is watching, so they can decide their own political future.”
