Wasserman Schultz Wants DeSantis to own new COVID Infection Surge

With the rise in COVID-19 variants spreading across the United States, a state experiencing a surge in COVID cases in Florida. Florida and Texas were some of the first states to declare that they were completely opening a few months ago, and there were no plans to implement any more restrictions. However, Democrats are now aiming verbal jabs at Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) over the increase in COVID cases, and want to give him credit for the new COVID infection surge.

On Twitter, Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D) highlighted the concern, arguing that rising COVID cases should be a wake-up call for DeSantis because hospitals are "inundated and patients are forced to suffer alone."

A new report from the Miami Herald, informs that there’s been a surge in patient admissions regarding COVID-19 infections in Florida hospitals, putting hospitals on high alert to make adjustments concerning visitations at various facilities.

“Driven by a highly contagious variant of the virus and the significant share of Floridians who remain unvaccinated, the number of new infections reported weekly by Florida’s health department has increased more than fourfold in a month, from 10,095 cases for the week ending June 17 to 45,449 on Friday.”

Rep. Wasserman Schultz criticized DeSantis, saying he “wanted full credit for reopening Florida before we beat the virus.” However, she said that “now, as our hospitals become inundated and patients are forced to suffer alone, let’s make sure he gets it.”

DeSantis has not yet responded to the criticism, and he is up for reelection in the upcoming 2022 midterm election. He faces challenges in Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried (D) and Florida Rep. Charlie Crist (D) who previously served as Governor of Florida as a Republican.
